The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, and other agencies that make up the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) are set up to immediately respond and protect the health of our nation during disasters and other emergencies.

Hexavalent chromium is a form of the metallic element chromium. Chromium is a naturally occurring element found in rocks, animals, plants, soil, and volcanic dust and gases.

NIEHS funds a substantial portfolio of research in the field of environmental health sciences conducted by investigators in many disciplines from various organizations. These research activities span the range from basic mechanistic research to clinical and epidemiologic studies using human subjects. NIEHS-supported investigators are currently determining how environmental agents cause or exacerbate a variety of human diseases. NIEHS is also committed to developing the next generation of environmental health scientists by supporting a variety of interdisciplinary training programs.

The goal of this research study is to compare persons who developed myositis during active duty to military personnel without autoimmune or muscle diseases, to assess risk factors for myositis.

Asthma patients seem to be more prone to viral infections, and NIEHS scientists believe that the cells that line these patients' airways, cause this result by overproducing TGF-beta1, a protein that promotes viral growth. This study seeks participants with and without asthma to contribute airway cell samples.

Researchers are interested in developing a registry protocol to obtain biologic and environmental samples anonymously from adult volunteers for use in laboratory tests and studies. The samples will be used to determine if new tests are sufficiently valid and precise to be used in research studies and for quality control purposes.
