Take Pride in Your Job: Seat Belts

NIOSH Publication No. 2009--109d: This video encourages oil and gas extraction workers to wear a seat belt whenever in a moving motor vehicle. The video features oil and gas extraction workers describing their use of seat belts and sharing their personal stories about why seat belts should be worn all the time - every time. The purpose of the video is to raise awareness of motor vehicle injuries in this industry and to provide information about the importance of buckling-up. This video is designed to be used in pre-shift or weekly safety meetings.

Move It! Rig Move Safety for Roughnecks

http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/ This video product makes a signification contribution to improving safety in the oil and gas extraction industry by targeting one of the most dangerous activities in the industry: the drilling rig move. Such a move includes all of the activities involved in disconnecting and disassembling an oil and gas drilling rig and its components, loading all of the equipment onto trucks, transporting the equipment to the next well site, and reassembling and reconnecting the rig and its components. During a rig move, there are dozens of workers and vehicles at the well site, resulting in what is referred to as "controlled chaos." This video features workers identifying the major hazards encountered during a rig move and describing ways to avoid them. The use of workers speaking in their own words makes this product compelling to oil and gas extraction workers. We did not use a script or solicit specific responses from the workers; all of the workers' comments are their own. So that the video represents the industry overall, we collected footage in two regions of the country, in austere conditions, and during actual rig moves. This video represents a major contribution to the oil and gas extraction industry because it was developed through an effective collaboration with safety and health experts as a training product specific to this industry and the only one on this topic. Based on the quality of two previous video products we developed to promote fall protection and seat belts in the industry, one company contacted us and proposed the development of a video focused on rig move safety. This and two additional companies provided us with access to their worksites and workers for the development of this product. We distributed nearly 1,500 copies of the video within six weeks of its release. The International Association of Drilling Contractors has also agreed to market this product to its members, on its website and at national meetings and conferences.

Buy Quiet - For Manufacturers

Noise-induced hearing loss is one of the most common work-related illness in the United States. Each year approximately 22 million U.S. workers are exposed to noise loud enough to damage their hearing. To create a more healthful workplace, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recommends preventing hazardous noise through controls for noise exposure (http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/noisecontrol/) and encourages business owners to create Buy Quiet (http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/buyquiet) programs as a first step.

Know Your Nailer: Nail Gun Safety

Nail guns are widely used on many construction jobs, especially in residential construction. While they boost productivity in some situations they may also cause tens of thousands of painful injuries each year. By using a nailer in full sequential mode, many of these injuries can be prevented. Partial Cab Video

A drilling worksite has many health and safety hazards. Drillers can see tripping hazards and dust, but may not realize that the noise around a drill rig can cause hearing loss. Over the course of a career, exposure to sound levels above 90 dB can cause noise-induced hearing loss. The sound levels while hammer drilling can reach 110 dB. At this sound level, a driller would be overexposed to nice in 30 minutes according to OSHA and MSHA regulations. To reduce drillers’ exposure to noise, NIOSH has developed a partial cab for surface drill rigs without cabs. NIOSH research shows the partial cab can reduce sounds levels at the control panel by as much as 9 dB. This video is part of a suite of information on building the partial cab from ordinary materials in a standard shop. Full instructions are available from the link below. http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/mining/works/coversheet1907.html

Practical Demonstrations of Ergonomic Principles

This video is a supplement to a NIOSH publication 2011-191, which consists of a series of demonstrations designed to complement training on ergonomic principles. Each demonstration highlights worker participation and uses relatively inexpensive materials. The demonstrations are organized by type of ergonomic principle. Five general topics are addressed: 1. Neutral compared with non-neutral postures; 2. Grip types; 3. Hand-tool selection and use; 4. Fatigue failure and back pain; and, 5. Moment arms and lifting. http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/mining/works/coversheet1237.html
