Know Your Nailer: Nail Gun Safety

Nail guns are widely used on many construction jobs, especially in residential construction. While they boost productivity in some situations they may also cause tens of thousands of painful injuries each year. By using a nailer in full sequential mode, many of these injuries can be prevented. For more information on nail gun safety: NIOSH Nail Gun Safety: http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/nailgun/ Straight Talk about Nail Gun Safety: http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/docs/2013-149/

Partial Cab Video

A drilling worksite has many health and safety hazards. Drillers can see tripping hazards and dust, but may not realize that the noise around a drill rig can cause hearing loss. Over the course of a career, exposure to sound levels above 90 dB can cause noise-induced hearing loss. The sound levels while hammer drilling can reach 110 dB. At this sound level, a driller would be overexposed to nice in 30 minutes according to OSHA and MSHA regulations. To reduce drillers’ exposure to noise, NIOSH has developed a partial cab for surface drill rigs without cabs. NIOSH research shows the partial cab can reduce sounds levels at the control panel by as much as 9 dB. This video is part of a suite of information on building the partial cab from ordinary materials in a standard shop. Full instructions are available from the link below. http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/mining/works/coversheet1907.html

NIOSH Health Hazard Evaluations: Sampling for Exposures

http://www.cdc.gov/niosh This short video describing the basics of exposure sampling that occurs as part of the NIOSH Health Hazard Evaluation (HHE) Program. The HHE Program uses various types of samplers to measure workplace exposure to chemicals and other substances in the air as well as to measure workplace exposure to other potential hazards such as noise. Workplace exposure sampling can be done during an entire workshift or during a specific work task. Exposure samplers are most commonly worn during a persons' usual work and generally will not get in the way of the work. Persons who have exposure sampling done will be notified of their results. Workplace exposure sampling is an important part of the HHE Program's goal to assist employees, employers, and unions in identifying occupational health hazards and recommending ways to reduce or eliminate those hazards (NIOSH Pub. No 2014-118).

Arc Flash Awareness

This video addresses a problem of an estimated 5 to 10 arc flash accidents occurring in electrical equipment every day in the United States, in 2007. These events have the potential to cause serious injuries and even death due to burns and other trauma. In the mining industry, non-contact electrical burns due to arc flash events are the largest single category of electrical injuries. To address this problem, NIOSH OMSHR researchers conducted a study of such injuries from an 11-year period, with findings that included the determination of organizational and human behavior components of arc flash incidents. http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/mining/works/coversheet1841.html

A harmful algal bloom (HAB) occurs when toxin-producing algae grow excessively in a body of water. Algae are microscopic organisms that live in aquatic environments and use photosynthesis to produce energy from sunlight, just like plants. The excessive algal growth, or algal bloom, becomes visible to the naked eye and can be green, blue-green, red, or brown, depending on the type of algae.
