CDC Works For You 24/7 Protecting People - CDC Ramps up Support for Final Push in Global Polio Eradication Effort - On Wednesday, December 14, 2011, CDC Director Thomas R. Frieden, M.D., M.P.H., charged the entire CDC community to become active participants in an intensified strategy to eradicate polio, worldwide. The briefing followed Dr. Frieden’s December 2nd announcement activating CDC’s Emergency Operations Center for the agency’s partnership engagement through the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI).

CDC Works For You 24/7 Protecting People - Working to Protect Against the Dangers of Dengue - Dengue, a painful and sometimes deadly viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes, threatens more than 3.5 billion people worldwide. Dengue is endemic in at least 100 countries in Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, the Caribbean, Central America, South America, and parts of Africa. As many as 100 million people become infected yearly, and nearly 500,000, mostly children, develop the potentially deadly dengue hemorrhagic fever.

Our objective was to evaluate treatment gaps in epilepsy and mental health care among California adults with epilepsy and to compare the mental health services and treatment received by people with epilepsy to that of the general population.

Older adults could benefit from public health interventions that address the health conditions they face. However, translation of evidence-based interventions into the community has been slow.

At the heart of our highly capable and committed global health staff are the more than 304 assignees in 50-plus countries, including approximately 40 staff detailed to international organizations. They are supported by the expertise and efforts of approximately 1,400 locally employed staff, contract staff, fellows and hundreds of headquarters staff who travel overseas each year to provide temporary technical assistance.
