Each day, people everywhere are exposed to chemicals - in their food, in the water they drink, and in the air they breathe. Some exposures are the result of accidents, disasters, or intentional attempts to cause harm. The environmental toxicology and epidemiology staff of the Health Studies Branch of CDC’s National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) specializes in studying, investigating and assessing the extent of and risk for human exposure to environmental chemicals and toxins, and determining the risk of adverse health effects from these exposures.

The Health Studies Branch (HSB) provides expertise and leadership in epidemiology to local, state, federal and international partners to help them prepare for and respond to natural and man-made public health disasters. To do this, HSB conducts surveillance, rapid needs assessments, epidemiology studies, and provides training in disaster epidemiology to public health professionals.

The Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) is a unique 2-year postgraduate training program of service and on-the-job learning for health professionals interested in the practice of applied epidemiology.
