Video: CDC Responds to HIV in Tanzania

Since PEPFAR was launched in 2004 AIDS-related deaths in Tanzania have dropped dramatically from 120,000 per year to 86, 000 in 2009, and the number of new HIV infections has dropped from 130, 000 to 100, 00 during that same timeframe. CDC continues to work with the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare along with local stakeholders to ensure that Tanzanians living with HIV receive the quality and comprehensive care and treatment services they need. The 360,000 individuals currently on ART, and the 800+ care and treatment clinics supported by CDC, are a testament to this commitment. Through this united effort, Tanzania is brought one step closer to achieving the common goal of an HIV-free generation. Director's Briefing: Impact of Tips from Former Smokers Campaign

Last year, CDC launched the Tips from Former Smokers campaign (www.cdc.gov/tips). We ran hard-hitting ads that vividly illustrated the damage caused by smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke, encouraged quitting, and offered help to those who wanted it. By the time it was over, the campaign prompted nearly a quarter of a million Americans to quit smoking, and more than 100,000 will likely remain quit. After they saw the ads, millions of nonsmokers talked to friends and family about the dangers of smoking and referred them to programs that could help them quit and save their lives. Director's Briefing: Heart Disease and Stroke

The CDC works 24/7 to save lives and protect people. This month's edition of Vital Signs (www.cdc.gov/vitalsigns/) focuses on the health problems that cause the most deaths in the United States: heart disease and stroke. One in three deaths in this country is due to cardiovascular disease. This figure is of great concern, especially because research clearly shows that we could prevent many of these deaths. Antibiotic Resistance Bacteria Threat Report

CDC's new report covers one of the most serious health threats we face today - antibiotic resistance. The fact that our antibiotics don't work as well as they used to, or at all, against a growing number of infections is alarming. We risk a future where simple infections can turn deadly. Cutting this threat requires urgent and immediate collaboration among public health, clinical medicine, agriculture, industry, and policy makers.
