Director's Briefing: Polio Eradication

Polio is a frightening disease that paralyzes and kills. In this Director's Briefing, Dr. Tom Frieden discusses how the finish line for polio eradication is in sight. In 2012, there were fewer cases of polio in fewer countries than ever before in history -- 222 cases. That is far from the 350,000 cases recorded when CDC and our partners started the campaign to eradicate polio in 1988. Although we have made tremendous progress against what used to be one of the most terrible diseases of our time, there is still work to do to get over the finish line. Director's Briefing: Progress Against HIV/AIDS

CDC works 24/7 to protect America's health. In this Director's Briefing video, CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden talks about how we have made real progress against HIV/AIDS. CDC is a driving force in implementing the goals of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy, and globally we and our partners are executing programs under the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). Director's Briefing: Rebuilding Haiti

In January 2010, Haiti suffered a devastating earthquake that killed more than 200,000 people, left millions homeless, and significantly damaged the country's already fragile infrastructure, including its health system. In this Director's Briefing video, CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden talks about how CDC, CDC Foundation (www.cdcfoundation.org), and other critical partners are helping Haiti recover and rebuild. New laboratories and office space are allowing critical public health work to continue, protecting people in Haiti and abroad from health threats. After all, diseases know no borders. Director's Briefing: SARS -- 10 Years Later

It has been 10 years since the global outbreak of SARS, which killed hundreds of people and cost tens of billions of dollars. In this Director's Briefing video, CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden talks about how we have made progress in disease detection since SARS; however, we remain at risk from global health threats, including emerging and drug-resistant microbes. Next-generation tools like molecular sequencing and bioinformatics can help us rapidly identify and stop these killer microbes before they spread, but we must act now. Director's Briefing: Testing to Prevent Colon Cancer

In this Director's Briefing video, CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden talks about this month's Vital Signs, which reports that about 23 million adults (ages 50-75) have not gotten the life-saving tests they need to find colon cancer early. Testing is important. Every year, more than 50,000 Americans die from colon cancer -- yet testing could have found precancerous growths and saved lives. There are different types of screening tests, and people are encouraged to talk with their doctor about which test is right for them. The best test is the test that gets done.
