El síndrome premenstrual (SPM) es una combinación de síntomas que muchas mujeres tienen una semana o dos antes de su período menstrual. La mayoría de las mujeres, más del 90 %, dicen que sienten algunos síntomas premenstruales, como hinchazón, dolores de cabeza y mal humor. Para algunas mujeres estos síntomas pueden ser tan fuertes que faltan al trabajo o a la escuela, pero otras mujeres no se sienten molestas porque sus síntomas son más leves. En promedio, las mujeres de entre 20 y 30 años son las que tienen síntomas de SPM con mayor frecuencia. Tu médico puede ayudarte a encontrar formas de aliviar tus síntomas.

El trastorno disfórico premenstrual (TDPM) es un problema de salud que es similar al síndrome premenstrual (SPM) pero más grave. El TDPM causa irritabilidad severa, depresión o ansiedad durante una o dos semanas antes del inicio del período menstrual. Los síntomas suelen desaparecer dos o tres días antes del inicio del período menstrual. Es posible que necesites tomar medicamentos o que sigas otros tratamientos para ayudarte con tus síntomas.
