In this Who's Leading the Leading Health Indicators? story, we looked at the University of Chicago Medical Center's Urban Health Initiative's South Side Healthcare Collaborative, a network of more than 30 community-based health centers, free clinics and local hospitals on the south side of Chicago, who partner to help residents make a long-term connection with a primary care physician.

The mission of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD) is to prevent disease, disability and death through immunization and by control of respiratory and related diseases. To achieve this goal, the mission of the Immunization Services Division is to protect individuals and communities from vaccine-preventable diseases through provision of federal funds and contracts to purchase vaccine, the provision of technical and financial support of immunization programs, provider and public education, and evaluation and research.

The Community Preventive Services Task Force recently posted new information on its website: "Use of Motorcycle Helmets: Universal Helmet Laws." The task force recommends universal motorcycle helmet laws (laws that apply to all motorcycle operators and passengers) based on strong evidence of effectiveness. Evidence indicates that universal helmet laws increase helmet use, decrease motorcycle-related fatal and nonfatal injuries, and are substantially more effective than no law or only partial motorcycle helmet laws.

Recommendations are offered regarding interventions for child care centers, primary and middle schools, high schools and colleges, outdoor occupational or recreational and tourism settings, and mass media and multicomponent communitywide campaigns.
